5A Identifying Local Opportunities

1. Giant alligator breaks into Florida home by crawling through kitchen window
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/state/florida/article231029223.html

On a casual Friday morning around 3:30 am, Mary Wishhusen (homeowner) woke up to a loud bang in the kitchen. The homeowner freaked out but decided to go investigate and noticed this intruder wasn't like any other. This intruder was an 11-foot gator (go gators) that broke into her home on Eagles Landing Circle West through her kitchen windows that are low. The homeowner was startled and called the police. Luckily, no one was injured.
The problem presented in this story that a 11-foot gator broke into a suburban Florida home by low kitchen windows.
Not only is this a problem for the homeowner, but it is also a problem for the rest of the neighborhood. This could've been any one of her neighbors. This could've been people with children, elders, pets, and etc. The gator could've been a greater danger to many others and this is problem they are involved with. The safety of their home and surrounding depend on it. This is Florida and it's known for it's wildlife. This is also a problem for the gators, which they are living in an environment where most of their home is taken up by civilization. They need a secured area to be animals if they're going to share the same land as humans. This problem is also toward landlords/companies that own the houses because other potential customers will hear about this issue and question safety. Losing good business.

2. We're victims of Carnival's illegal dumping, Bahamas and Alaska residents tell court
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/tourism-cruises/article231038508.html

The Carnival cruise line Corp was caught violating its probation with six new charges by victims from the Bahamas and Alaska. These new charges grew from Carnival cruise lines convictions in 2016 for dumping oil waste into the ocean... and then covering it up, for eight years!! They have been convicted previously of the same activity since 1998. Carnival got on probation, but kept the same activities going. Several environmental organizations wrote to the judge noting that Carnival committed violations, and impose greater penalties.

The problem presented in the story is Carnival cruise line has violated their probation by effecting the environment especially to Bahamas and Alaska residents.
This is a problem for the Bahamas and Alaska residents because it's effecting their waters with pollution which will then effect multiple others (wildlife, food supply, drinking water, etc). It also effects Carnival because this may take a toll on their business for all the violations and lose money.

3. These portable speakers can explode. More than 40,000 have been recalled
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/business/article230787494.html

ION audio portable speakers have been recalled due to explosions. Hydrogen gas leaks from the portable speakers battery when being charged which causes the explosion which shows up as a explosion hazard. Multiple brands have bought these speakers of the China-manufacturing. There have been reports of the explosive audio speakers, but no injuries.

The problem presented in the story is ION Audio making and selling audio portable speakers that result to explosion.
This is a problem for brands buying the speakers from ION Audio and normal customers that are being introduced to a hazard.

4. Women's hair styling gel sold nationally recalled for bacterial contamination
https://www.miamiherald.com/living/health-fitness/article230929498.html

The Village Company has gotten their hair styling gel recalled by the FDA. Almost 3,000 cases against the la Bella Extreme Sport Styling Gel were found after types of bacteria (burkholderia cepacia) and related strains were found. The notice says the bacteria barely does any harm unless you have cystic fibrous, a weakened immune system, and chronic lung disease. Bottles across the country have been recalled for the contamination.
The problem presented in the story is The Village Company created a cosmetic product that has the potential to harm customers, and have.
This is a problem for customers with cystic fibrous, weakened immune system, and chronic lung disease. This also concerns The Village Company.

5. Prepare for cannabis growth, not 'green rush' in Florida, Colorado pot czar warns
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article230982068.html

Now that voters decided to make medical marijuana legal in Florida, many people are asking how it will help the economy. Andrew Freedman (Colorados first cannibal czar) told the Economic Club of Florida that we must treat marijuana as agriculture and not an alloy. Because its cannabis regulators will decide who profits. You will get business if you treat this as something more. Because it is a product which means it needs to be checked up for safety and all. It's not the gold rush people have in mind.
The problem presented in the story is citizens thinking marijuana will only benefit the economy and nothing else.
This is a problem for medical patients, law makers, and Andrew Freedman.

    1. Hi, Jennifer Ronderos!

I love the local opportunity that you saw! I just watched the alligator news story on television a couple of days ago. I was in shock that this was even possible. I believe that maybe floor windows shouldn’t be legal. If she didn’t have the window near the bottom of her house, there may not have been a way for the alligator to get through. Maybe there’s a solution to that such as not allowing windows near the ground OR requiring stronger glass when it’s near the bottom of the house.

Here’s the local opportunities that I found if you’d like to take a look: https://kimmiepalo.blogspot.com/2019/05/identifying-local-opportunities.html
